Marie-Adelaide (1685—1712), daughter of Victor-Ame-dee II, Duke of Savoy, in 1697 married Louis, Dauphin of France, Duke of Burgundy and grandson of Louis XIV. It was to mark this occasion that De Troy painted this portrait.
