Oil on canvas. 118 X 148 cm. Inv. No 818 The picture was painted in 1801. A drawing in India ink, representing the first sketch for this canvas, is in the possession of the Museum of Tournus. Oil on canvas. 60 X 50.5 cm (oval). Inv. No 1228 Andrei Shuvalov (1744—1789) was a poet and an Honorary Member of the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. Met Voltaire, carried on a correspondence with him and other figures of the French Enlightenment. The picture is a companion piece to the portrait of Countess E. Shuvalova (The Hermitage, Inv. No. 5726). It was painted in Paris between 1776 and 1781. Provenance: until 1924 The Shuvalovs Collection, St Petersburg — Petrograd; 1924—28 The Hermitage,

Oil on canvas. 70 X 57 cm. Inv. No 2170 Louis XVI (1754—1793) was King of France from 1775. His reign was marked by the French Revolution; he was guillotined. This is evidently a sketch for the large coronation portrait of Louis XVI which was exhibited in the Salon of 1777 and is now at Versailles. Provenance: until 1927 The Hermitage, Leningrad;
