FRANQOIS BOUCHER. 1703-1770

45 HERCULES AND OMPHALE

Oil on canvas. 90 X 74 cm. Inv. No 2764 The subject, taken from Greek mythology, was a favorite one with artists of the Rococo period. The well-known picture of the same title by F. The present canvas belongs to the early period of Boucher's career (early 1730s), when his palette and artistic manner were still very close to those of Lemoine. A copy of Boucher's work made by Fragonard was put up at an auction of the Sireuil Collection in 1781. Provenance: 1777 Sale of the Collection of Randon de Boisset, Paris; 1787 Sale of the Collection of Count de Vaudreuil, Paris; 1820 The M.
